New Years Resolutions

As 2009 comes to a close many people including myself will be setting goals (New Years Resolutions) for the new year. Just a couple of weeks ago I listed goals for my ministry and my personal life. Goals to be a better husband, to keep taking risks for God, to invite 5 people to church every week, to begin pursuing a masters degree, to buy a house, to have fun and a few more. Goals are good! They give us something to work towards, they give us vision, they motivate us, they keep us dreaming! Ever since I set my goals a couple of weeks ago I have been praying that God would give me the drive to pursue and accomplish them when 2010 arrived and then yesterday I stumbled upon a piece of scripture that jumped off the page at me.

"Thus says the Lord: Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord..." Jeremiah 9:23-24 ESV

Why not set that at the top of your New Years Resolutions? Why not make 'knowing and understanding God" the number one goal for 2010?!?! Other goals are totally fine, setting goals to be healthier, get a raise, climb the ladder at work, take a trip, to save money, all of these are fine, but in the end God says the thing that matters most is to "...understand and know me, that I am the Lord..."

What a great goal and vision to go into 2010 with! Above all else, all the other goals, Get to know Him a little better in 2010. Don't just go through the motions, don't just accumulate information about God, don't just be religious, but engage in RELATIONSHIP with God. Let him rub off on you daily. When you know and understand God, his ways become your ways and then along the way reaching other Goals are a lot more joyful to reach for.

Have a Happy New Year!
